Tour Dates

Our version of a Tour of is a rather more relaxed affair than the professional event, although on the second last day you will have the option of doing some of those famous cobbled climbs if you like! The focus of this trip though is wonderful northern European riding along quiet roads and cycle paths with time to explore the stunning Belgian cities of Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Leuven. Cycling and cultural sightseeing (and great food and beer) – what isn’t to like?

Grade 2 Cycle TourCycling

The landscape we cycle through is surprisingly varied, from coastal dunes to poplar lined canals, characterful en-route villages and then the rolling hills of the Flemish Ardennes. Most of the riding is fairly flat and straightforward, with at least half of the route on off-road cycle paths. And while it isn’t the focus of the trip, in the final couple of days you have the chance to take on some of those famous cobbled hills (or to walk up them with the guides or avoid them entirely!) A ride within the reach of most cyclists, with a bit of optional fun and challenge mixed in at the end…for those riders who want extra miles, or who aren’t keen on sightseeing, gpx files for extra loops at the end of the day will be provided to enable you to burn a bit more bicycle rubber.

Highlights

  • visit and explore some of Europe’s most stunning cities
  • ride mainly on quiet back roads and cycle paths, through a wide variety of landscapes including coast and canal-side
  • Belgian beer (with or without alcohol) and food – say no more
  • the option to try your hand at some of the famous climbs on the Tour of Flanders
  • big skies and rows of poplar trees

Accommodation

Your accommodation is on a twin-share, bed and breakfast basis in a mix of comfortable chain hotels and selected family-run properties. We prioritise rider comfort, with air-conditioned rooms where possible and secure bike storage throughout. While chain hotels offer consistent quality, we also include locally-run options with character when available.

NB Single accommodation is available for a supplement of £395.

Meals

The hotels will provide breakfast whilst the support team will provide a pack-up lunch, this will depend on what is available on the day and could include a mix of fresh sandwiches, pasties or easy grab and bites sourced from local bakeries. If weather doesn’t permit outdoors we will get into cafes for quick lunch.

You will need to purchase your own evening meals, which are usually eaten communally although of course you are free to opt out if you wish.

We will carry emergency energy gels and bars in the support van but you are advised to bring along your own preferred sports nutrition to fuel your ride. There will be water refills, fruits bars etc provided to keep you hydrated.

In the Tour Plan, (B, L, D) refers to meals included in the trip cost i.e. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Bike Transfers

We will happily transport your bike to Dover and back from Dunkirk at no extra charge. If you drop your bike off at our Sheffield office up to a day before departure we will carefully pack it in the support van, drive it to the start and then return it to Sheffield ready for you to collect.

If that isn’t convenient then depending where you live we may be able to collect your bike on our journey from Sheffield to Dover. Please get in touch with us to discuss arrangements, any other arrangements will be for an agreed fee.

While we will take all reasonable care while handling your bikes, using padded covers and making sure they are securely stored, we are not liable for any loss or damage during transportation and storage. We recommend you have appropriate insurance.

Taking your bikes to the continent, As we are no longer part of the EU customs unions, any bike we transport to Europe requires an ATA Carnet which incurs a fee of £60 per bike. This cost will be added to your invoice.

Joining Day - Dover to Calais Ferry and cycle to Ostend
9am ferry Dover to Calais p&o. Aim to be riding by 1pm. Optional stay in Dover the previous night is possible please get in touch.
57 miles, 500 feet.
Our first day takes us north east, the wind pushing us along (editor’s note this isn’t a promise) the coastline, with long sandy beaches and a detour inland to Nieuwport, site of the Battle of Yser. Most of the day we will follow the EV4 route, including 29 miles of cycle path, arriving in the characterful seaside city of Ostend, with its long beach and promenade, for our first night.
2
Ostend to Bruges
39.5 miles, 250 feet ascent
If we rode the most direct route, today would only be 15 miles, so we take a slightly winding route first along the coast before cutting inland and cycling along beautiful paved canal paths lined with poplar trees before leaving plenty of time to explore Bruges that afternoon and evening.
3
Bruges to Ghent
28 miles, 200 feet
More big skies, canals, cycle paths and quiet roads. Ghent is our favourite of all the Belgian cities – as beautiful as Bruges but more laid back and less touristy and crowded. For those who want more miles, we will craft a cycling route around the city to enjoy on your own. Or if you would rather take your time sampling the lovely local beers and good food instead, we won’t judge you.
4
Ghent to Antwerp
44 miles, 425 feet
Rather than taking the dull cycling superhighway up to Antwerp, instead we follow the scenic Scheldt river route – a longer but stunning path featuring ferries, castles and charming villages, and finishing with a waterbus into Antwerp itself. Antwerp is a historic port city, combining Flemish Renaissance architecture with Europe’s second largest port and yet more great gastronomy.
5
Antwerp to Leuven
40 miles, 475 feet
Belgium’s cycling superhighways are impressive, direct, and traffic free. But they don’t always offer the best scenery. So again today we take a bit of a looped route to Leuven down the railway line side path to Lier before following the canal down through Duffel and then straight and direct into beautiful 15th century Leuven – the smallest city so far, with the oldest university in the low countries.
6
Leuven to Mons
49 miles, 1,750 feet
We leave Brussels to our west – too big a metropolis for a tour such as this - and make our way south west towards the Flemish Ardennes. Today the hills begin to ramp up a bit, in preparation for the optional cobbled hill climbs tomorrow. After Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Leuven, there is something relaxing about Mons’ lower key and less well known charms, albeit its squares, links to Van Gogh and UNESCO heritage site belfry mean it still packs a punch.
7
Mons to Kortrijk
54 miles, 1900 or 2,275 feet ascent depending on which climbs are included
Today is a bit of fun. The Tour of Flanders is famous for its cobbled climbs, and today you have the option to include five of them, including Koppenberg, Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg. But don’t be intimidated by this. None of them are long, the daily ascent is still manageable, and there are easier diversions around them all. We also aren’t too proud to push if you aren’t. But we simply couldn’t organise a tour of Flanders without some of this, could we? The support van will be on hand at the bottom of the climbs to hand out walking shoes!
8
Kortrijk to Dunkirk
55 miles, 1400 or 1550 feet
A final lap of honour back across the border into France and our final night in Dunkirk. Including one more optional cobbled climb, and as we approach and enter France, lines of vines and more big skies. Time to explore WW11 history and a brilliant art gallery on arrival, before a final meal and some French cuisine in this lively port city.
9
Departure Day
We will organise a transfer back to Calais for the 9.50am ferry back to Dover with P&O.
