Our Portugal End to End cycle tour travels down the backbone of Portugal crossing 4 mountains ranges, 11 rivers and 29 municipalities.

Grade 3 Cycle TourCycling

You’ll definitely be challenged with an overall distance of 729km and almost 10,000m of climbing needed to reach our end goal at the resort of Faro. We designed the tour to be achievable for most regular cyclists, however hill training and consecutive days in the saddle beforehand is essential. Throughout the tour our cycling guide will be on hand to offer guidance and encouragement when needed. Also our support van be available at convenient points along each route to provide assistance

Highlights

  • Cycle North to South of Portugal
  • Ride across 4 mountain ranges, 11 rivers and 29 municipalities
  • Free bike transfers from the UK
  • Celebrate final night in Faro
  • Small group size we limit the numbers to 12

Accommodation

Your accommodation is located as close as possible to the planned route on a bed and breakfast basis.

The trip is costed on a twin share basis, although single rooms may be available on payment of a £395 single supplement.

Meals

The hotels will provide breakfast whilst the support team will provide a pack-up lunch.

You will need to purchase your own evening meals, which are usually eaten communally although of course you are free to opt out if you wish.

We will carry emergency energy gels and bars in the support van but you are advised to bring along your own preferred sports nutrition to fuel your ride.

In the Tour Plan, (B, L, D) refers to meals included in the trip cost i.e. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Arrival / Departure Transfers

We are offering transfers from Porto to Chaves, some 150km away. Porto provides flight options from several UK airports. Our transfer bus will leave no later than 1pm for the 2 hour journey to our starting point at Chaves, so your flight will need to arrive at least 1 hour before then.

For anyone travelling with their bike, depending on the numbers, there may be an extra charge if we need a vehicle with a trailer.

Bike Transfers

We will happily transport your bike to Chaves and back from Faro at no extra charge. If you drop your bike off at our Sheffield office up to four days before departure we will carefully pack it in the support van, drive it to the start and then return it to Sheffield ready for you to collect.

If that isn’t convenient then depending where you live we may be able to collect your bike on our journey from Sheffield to Portsmouth. Please get in touch with us to discuss arrangements, any other arrangements will be for an agreed fee.

While we will take all reasonable care while handling your bikes, using padded covers and making sure they are securely stored, we are not liable for any loss or damage during transportation and storage. We recommend you have appropriate insurance.

Taking your bikes to the continent, As we are no longer part of the EU customs unions, any bike we transport to Europe requires an ATA Carnet which incurs a fee of £60 per bike. This cost will be added to your invoice.

Arrival Day
Arrive at Porto and transfer to Chaves. After settling into your rooms, we'll have an evening briefing, offering the riders and leaders the opportunity to get together and discuss the preparations for the week ahead.
2
Cycle from Chaves to Peso da Ragua
90km with around 1200m of ascent
We spend our first day in the saddle crossing the hills and valleys of the stunning Douro region. (B,L)
3
Cycle from Peso da Ragua to Viseu
84km with around 1500m of ascent
A memorable day in the saddle as we cycle south through the Douro wine growing region, ending in the historic city of Viseu. (B,L)
4
Cycle from Viseu to Pedrogao Pequeno
156km with around 2100m of ascent
Although on paper, this looks like it could be a really tough day in the saddle, much of the morning is spent riding on the wonderfully smooth "Ecopista Do Dao", a colourful, tarmacked cycle path that takes us mainly downhill, completely away from the traffic, all the way from Viseu to Santa Comba Dao. From here we start to wend our way up into the hills, through stunning scenery until we reach the evening's hotel, which looks down over the Cabril dam. (B,L)
5
Cycle from Pedrogao Pequeno to Abrantes
76km with around 1000m of ascent
Today’s ride will take us through a number of the country’s provinces to the town of Abrantes. Along our route we will experience some fantastic rolling hills and lovely scenery as we continue down the spine of this picturesque country. (B,L)
6
Cycle from Abrantes to Évora
130km with around 980m of ascent
Today we deviate from the N2 and head south east to Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's medieval walls surround an historic centre of cobbled streets, with monuments from various historical periods, dating back to the Roman era. (B,L)
7
Cycle from Évora to Castro Verde
122km with around 950m of ascent
Today we get the opportunity to pass olive plantations, cork oaks and rolling countryside as we make our way to our overnight stay in Castro Verde. (B,L)
8
Cycle from Castro Verde to Faro
99km with around 850m of ascent
Our last day’s cycling is a joy with some twisty road sections, pine forests and fantastic views as we approach the end of this epic journey. The last 15km takes us off the N2 on to a parallel route to avoid busy traffic. We end our tour at the marina next to the 'Faro' sign. In the evening we will enjoy a celebratory meal in Faro. (B,L)
9
Departure Day
Making your own arrangements, you will depart the hotel for the airport and your return flight. Or why not stay on and enjoy a day or so in the Algarve. Meanwhile your bikes will start their journey back home with our crew. (B)

A really well put together trip, with great hotels, and bike carriage is much better than using plane with bike.

Evora would make a fantastic place to have 2 nights, with a local ride and a chance to explore the City more.

Many thanks to Tori, Nancy and Rich for the friendly and sound running of everything.

Don and Olly were great. They had a good knowledge of the route and the towns we stayed in, were pro-active about making sure things ran smoothly, unobtrusively present during the rides to make sure nobody was left behind, good company of an evening and worked really hard to make it an enjoyable trip for all of us.

I had a really good trip, that will live long in the memory, thanks.
