Come and ride the roads the pros ride! The mountains behind the Costa Blanca are renowned as being where pro teams train in winter, thanks to wonderful sweeping and gradually gradiented climbs and quiet roads. By late April, the weather is likely to be wonderful, the blossom out, and the craggy limestone mountains looking at their best. By late October you will have had the whole summer to prepare! And you don’t need to be a pro to enjoy riding with us!
Cycling
Yes, this is not the easiest route. It is hilly!! But you don’t need to climb like Alberto Contador to take it on – we will always regroup at the top of climbs to enable everyone to go at their own pace. The route has been planned to take in some of the most famous climbs and passes of the Costa Blanca mountains, including the Col de Rates and many others that frequently feature in the Vuelta de Espana. Yet it also starts with a day along the coast south of Alicante to warm up your legs, and another stretch along the northern Costa Blanca coast. The quietest roads have been followed as much as possible. On three of the days there is an option to have a shorter day if those leg muscles are aching! So don’t be intimidated by the daily distances and ascent.
Highlights
- Dramatic limestone mountain scenery
- Epic climbs and descents, but most at very manageable gradients (only a few climbs more than 5 to 6%)
- Climb some of the famous passes of the Vuelta de Espana, and maybe overtake some pros (ahem)
- Characterful small towns and villages, and three nights in the beautiful city of Alicante
- A contrasting opening day along the coast south of Alicante, featuring the sea and salt marshes
- Got a challenge coming up – why not treat this as a fun training camp?

Arrival Day
Alicante loop via coast, Elche
73 miles, 1,775 feet ascent
A warm-up day before all the hilly ones to come. Stay in AlicanteAlicante to Alcoi
65 miles, 5,525 feet ascent. Or 72 miles, 6750 feet climbing with extra optional loop
A looped route around the lesser known (less extreme) southern fringes of the Costa Blanca mountains, including an optional extra climb up to a hilltop sanctuary for those who are feeling strong and / or spiritual, with wonderful views of the coast and the next few days of riding. Stay in AlcoiAlcoi to Alcoi – Port de Tudons route

66 miles, 4,175 feet ascent
Today zig zags in and around the northern fringes of the Costa Blanca massif, including summiting the Col Valle D’Ebo. Stay in Pego.Pego to Xalo (inc Bernia and Gata de Gorgos)
64 miles and 5,875 feet climb.
A day in three stages, which you can do one, two or three of. First, a ride over to Vall D’Ebo, down through the scenic ‘secret valley’ south of there and on down the valley past characterful villages like Benigembla. Second, a spectacular ride around the Bernia loop, before a final flatter optional loop down to Gata de Gorgos and back to the lovely small town of Xalo. Stay in Xalo.Xalo to Guadalest via Col de rates and Benasau
46 miles, 4,600 feet ascent or with extra Guadalest loop – 58 miles, 7,000 feet ascent.
Today we finally summit (and descent) the famous Col de Rates, which with its gradual 5% gradients is far less intimidating than you might think. A looping route from there west to Castell de Castells before looping back south and west to the renowned Guadalest area and its scenic reservoir, which you can do an extra hilly loop around if feeling lively! Stay in Guadalest area.Guadalest to Alicante via Sella and Relleu.
63 miles, 5,350 feet ascent.
We head initially due south east towards the skyscrapers of Benidorm, but (fear not) don’t go that far! Instead we loop up through Finestrat beneath the prominent mountainous landmark of Puig Campana, up to the hilltown of Sella, Relleu, and south from there towards the coast and into Alicante for a final night out.
Stay in Alicante.
